Traveling along Deerfoot at the Calf Robe bridge I’ve seen these interesting looking birds sitting on the top of the street lights.
Are they Cormorants?
Yes, I’ve seen a couple there recently. Dark, very tall-looking birds. See this post: Q & A
Why are red polls still in my back yard feeder? Two pairs, mid July? NW Calgary, Tuscany.
That would be very unusual. Are you sure they are Redpolls and not House Finches? Can you get a photograph?
I am familiar with Redpolls as they usually stay the winter at my feeder. The two males look like Redpolls with a strong red cap, no trace of brown that would be expected in a House finch. The females have a slight red flush on the head. The streaks on flank and rump are more distinct than those on the House Finch. I do not have a long telephoto lens so a good photo is not possible. I think I have Redpolls that have decided city living is not too bad. I live right at the western edge of NW Calgary. Thanks, Doug
