Hi Raymond, Loved your photos! We are coming to Calgary next week for a birdwatching trip (our own) and wondered where you saw these birds – especially the Varied Thrush and Pileated WP nest, Stellars Jay- Is there a particular park you went to in Crowsnest? Thanks, Angela and Dan Brouwer
Raymond Toal replies:
Varied Thrush – Neighbour’s yard in Frank, CNP (Crowsnest Pass)
Steller’s Jay – Friend’s yard Beaver Mines (South of CNP)
Pileated Woodpecker – Five km north of CNP @ Grassy Mountain
Grebe with chick – Beauvais Lake Provincial Park (between CNP and Pincher Creek)
American Avocet – Frank Lake, ten km east of High River AB
Short-Eared Owl – About 8 km North of Cowley AB (between Pincher Creek and CNP)
Bald Eagle – Bank of the Oldman River and just West of the Porcupine Hills
Rose-Breasted Grosbeak – Friend’s yard Beaver Mines (South of CNP)
American Kestrel – on the “Snake Trail” (West side of the Porcupine Hills ie. A few km East of highway 22)
If you are contemplating a visit to this area I suggest a visit to Beauvais Lake PP and the highway 510 area North of Cowley and the Porcupine Hills. I hope this helps and thank you for your kind remarks about the photos.
Great photos, Raymond. As Pat says, “Bird On!”
