Sunday Showcase: Mountain Bluebird Fallout

Posted by Dan Arndt

Since the snowstorm on Sunday, April 14, many Mountain Bluebirds have been reported in the city. These migrants were forced down by the weather. Over 100 were reported in Fish Creek Park, about two dozen at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, and about 40 in a yard in Maple Ridge. Rob English spotted these bluebirds feeding in the Mountain Ash trees near his home, and sent us these great photos.

After hearing about the large flocks all around the city, and that the numbers were quickly dwindling at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, I headed out on Tuesday evening with the Swarovski ATX 85, Pentax K-30, and digiscoping adapter, and spent a good hour watching and photographing a flock of six stragglers. While I had hoped that they would stick around so our Sunday group would get a chance to see them, I couldn’t take that chance, and boy am I glad I did!

  1. Hi Dan,
wow! great pictures…you gotta love the male mountain bluebirds. You can take some great pictures. I live in South Carolina, US, so we have the Eastern Bluebirds in our area. I have four boxes and all had a brood this year. Another box is starting now.

Did you get all these pictures from your home. It’s amazing howyou got group shots.

I have a few pictures posted on my recently started blog but I can’t take pictures like you can. I am looking at getting a Cannon Rebel with a nice lense so I can shoot better pictures. check out my couple pictures.
    thanks,
    Michael

    • Hi Michael,

These photos were actually taken with a Pentax K-30 attached to a Swarovski ATX-85, and were taken at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in March of this year. It was a really unexpected find, and there were some reports around the city of over 100 bluebirds in some neighborhoods along the river bank, due to a major snowstorm that forced them to land and forage about in the city limits.

      Hope that helps!
      – Dan
